19 Days of Activism for Prevention of Child Abuse

In 2011, the Women's World Summit Foundation (WWSF) launched a global campaign called 19 Days of Activism in an effort to prevent violence and abuse against children. The rationale is that, after 10 years of campaigning to annually mark the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse - November 19 - and building an international coalition of actors and partners, WWSF felt that creating a global campaign (November 1-19) would be an opportunity to expand its outreach. By focusing during 19 days on the prevention of diverse types of abuse and violence against children and youth, the campaign - now an annual campaign - aims to continue to bring to light this problem, its multifaceted aspects, and the need to generate sufficient grassroots interest and government and public support for better prevention measures.
This annual advocacy campaign draws upon a multi-issue coalition of diverse organisations and partners, including young people, that are involved in the fight against one or more of the 19 abuse issues listed in the WWSF toolkit "Prevention is Key! Let's Make Prevention of Abuse and Violence against Children a Global Priority" [see Related Summaries section below for access]. These are organisations working for a social transformation by mobilising agents for change and informed prevention actors to help create public awareness and support at the national, regional, and/or international level. To assist them, WWSF is providing campaign materials [PDF]. As detailed on the 19 Days website, the 19 campaign themes include:
- Children involved in armed conflict (2012 main theme)
- Sexual abuse
- Bullying (2015 main theme)
