Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This illustrated booklet provides information on mural painting with a focus on experiences and images from the 1995-1996 seven-city mural project in South Africa, and is a guide for people interested in developing an AIDS mural. The Beyond Awareness Campaign (BAC)focuses on developing murals at and around South African tertiary institutions. The booklet breaks down the nine basic steps to consider when initiating a mural painting program: :
  • a synopsis of AIDS Murals in South Africa
  • approaches to participatory mural development
  • funding and budgets
  • site location and permission
  • choosing the group
  • workshops
  • materials and equipment
  • the painting process
  • documentation

The steps are reinforced with detailed descriptions and photographs of the seven murals completed in the BAC. The murals were completed in East London, Durban, Johannesburg, Gugulethu, Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth.

BAC was a multimedia communications campaign conducted by a consortium of organizations on behalf of the HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases Directorate of the National Department of Health.
