Barriers and Gaps Affecting mHealth in Low and Middle Income Countries: A Policy White Paper

Summary: This is white paper written by The Earth Institute at Columbia University and mHealth Alliance on the "Barriers and Gaps affecting mHealth in Low and Middle Income Countries." It was officially launched on May 3rd at the mHealth Alliance and USAID-supported eConference on mHealth for maternal and child health. The review identified significant gaps in mHealth knowledge from limited implementation and evaluation, a policy environment that does not link health objectives to available mHealth tools, and little investment in cost-benefit studies. Most of the current evidence is in the field of computer science and not health, though it does provide indication of the barriers to be overcome to create the policy environment to implmeent local and national projects. One of their main conclusions was that the current single-solution focus of mHealth needs to be replaced by using mHealth as an extension and integrator of underlying healht informiaton systems along the continuum of care.
