Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Earth Institute. (2010). Barriers and Gaps Affecting mHealth in Low and Middle Income Countries: A Policy White Paper. Washington, D.C.: mHealth Alliance.

Summary: This is white paper written by The Earth Institute at Columbia University and mHealth Alliance on the "Barriers and Gaps affecting mHealth in Low and Middle Income Countries." It was officially launched on May 3rd at the mHealth Alliance and USAID-supported eConference on mHealth for maternal and child health.

The review identified significant gaps in mHealth knowledge from limited implementation and evaluation, a policy environment that does not link health objectives to available mHealth tools, and little investment in cost-benefit studies. Most of the current evidence is in the field of computer science and not health, though it does provide indication of the barriers to be overcome to create the policy environment to implmeent local and national projects.

One of their main conclusions was that the current single-solution focus of mHealth needs to be replaced by using mHealth as an extension and integrator of underlying healht informiaton systems along the continuum of care.
