Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Many best wishes to everyone in this Drum Beat network - we are honoured that you have subscribed to this process and that we can support your work.

  

Over the past 10 years, every issue of The Drum Beat and 99.9% of the content in the online CI knowledge portals within  The CI website have been focused on sharing, communicating, and promoting the important work, analysis, and ideas of people and organisations addressing vitally important development issues.

 

I hope that you will indulge us if we focus this issue of The Drum Beat on building the capacity and sustainability of The Communication Initiative itself.

   

The CI Partners are seeking the engagement of your office as a CI Associate in order to preserve, sustain, and advance this growing knowledge sharing and strategic development process.  The CI Associates programme is like a voluntary subscription process.

 

The key principles driving the Associates initiative are:

 

1. That a large number of organisations benefit from The Communication Initiative process - 75,000 people in the network from thousands of organisations in 200 plus countries and territories with 2 million plus user sessions per annum - and that use and involvement is growing.

 

2. That we need to respond to the growth of this network which, in the first 8 months of this year, included 75% of all online CI site use from [so called] developing countries and 25% from the 24 economically richest countries in the world. This pattern and trend is also reflected in the nature and growth of the network itself, with a similar majority percentage from developing countries and the strongest emerging demand from local organisations in developing countries.   
     
3. That presently, all of the costs for these services are borne by a small number of Partner organisations - and most have indicated strongly that they will continue this support.

 

4. That we are seeking to both grow and share the financial base for operating and strengthening The CI process by complementing the larger Partner contributions with many smaller financial contributions from a large number of organisational offices and divisions/sections whose staff are involved in and utilising The CI services - we call this The CI Associates initiative - further details here

 

5. That, in particular, if those organisations with comparatively "good" budget levels can make a CI Associates voluntary subscription payment then this will greatly help The CI in continuing to be freely available to all, no matter what their organisational size, focus, or location.

              

The suggested CI Associate payment levels are:

USD 5,000 per office - For Country, Regional, and HQ offices of major international development organisations

USD 2,500 per office - For Country, Regional, and HQ offices for medium-sized international NGOs

USD 2,000 per department - University Departments - OECD Countries

USD 750 per department - University Departments - All other Countries

USD 100 - Small, Local NGOs/CBOs

If you are someone with payment authorisation to the levels above, if you value the role and performance of The Communication Initiative, and you are inclined to support The CI through a relevant budget line - e.g., Materials, Publications, Training, Fees and Dues, Knowledge Management, Staff Training/Development, or other appropriate line - then please authorise payment either through the online payment form or email Warren at wfeek@comminit.com requesting a CI Associates subscription invoice.

 

If you are someone without that payment authorisation level, then can we please ask you, if you value the work of The CI related to your work responsibilities, to ask your managers if they will consider making a CI Associates subscription payment from a relevant office budget line [see above for suggestions] and to either make that payment online or to email Warren at wfeek@comminit.com requesting a CI Associates subscription invoice.
