Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Knowledge Shifts
Save the Children Fund studied knowledge about AIDS prevention in the whole Mopti region, and found that those exposed to the radio were much better informed about AIDS than other regions, 70% of those claimed radio as their main source of information.
Practices
Save the Children Fund estimates that wheras before Radio Douentza started broadcasting, only about 30% of the district's children were brought in for inoculation, that figure is now 50%, following discussions of its importance on the air. In terms of environmental management, after broadcasts which recommended marking and conserving naturally occurring trees, it was found that the number of farmers doing this increased from 6% to 43% in the sample. Literacy classes were attended by more villagers after radio announcement, with an increase in attendance of nearly 120%.
Access
Listener numbers account for about 86% of the local population, a probable regular listener audience of 92,500 people. When Radio Douentza went on-air in 1993, radio ownership in the area is estimated to have jumped by 140%.
