Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Producing Manuals for Non-literate Farmers: Handbook for Development Workers

SummaryText
This handbook is designed to guide development workers through the process of developing their own manuals for non-literate people - particularly farmers - in developing countries for use by individuals and organisations. Produced as part of an initiative called Illustrated Manuals for Development Projects (IMDP) (click here for a summary), these simple training manuals for non-literate farmers cover a range of subjects. Using simple language, these manuals are short (around 1-4 pages in length) and show sequences of pictures on a particular topic that clearly depict the task without the use of words. They were produced in collaboration with local people in West African countries using IMDP techniques - methods developed to help local development organisations produce their own training materials. The manuals can be downloaded from the project website and photocopied for field use. Organisations using this method to produce manuals are encouraged to send copies of their new manuals to the organisers to post on the website for others to use.
