Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"...phone-based phone surveys can get high-quality...data at a fraction of the cost of traditional in-person surveys. With this kind of data in hand, everyone working to make social change...can be more flexible and responsive in the services they offer..."

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly every country and society around the world has been practicing social distancing and placing restrictions on travel and face-to-face interaction. One impact of these changes is that nearly all in-person research has been temporarily suspended, and many of the organisations conducting this research are shifting some or all of their work to phone-based surveys. 60 Decibels, a tech-enabled company measuring social impact around the world, has created this guide to share the key lessons they have learned in conducting phone-based surveys since 2014.

Contents include:

  • Part 01: 10 Tips for Remote Phone Surveys
  • Part 02: Resources
    • Cheat Sheet: Technology Pros and Cons
    • Cheat Sheet: Remote Surveying Providers
    • Cheat Sheet: Survey Rules Of Thumb
    • Enumerator Checklist: 7 Tips For A Successful Interview
  • Part 03: Customer Question Sets - This section groups questions into themes (e.g, poverty profile; respondents' attitudes, behaviours, preferences) so that the reader can mix and match questions based on his or her needs. There are 2-5 questions in each question set, and each question has been tested with respondents. A chart outlines how to use these questions for data-driven decisions.
