Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The second edition of this guide describes influential theories of health-related behaviours, the processes of shaping behaviours, and the effects of community and environmental factors on behaviour. Theory at a Glance is written to make health behaviour theory accessible and provides tools to solve problems and assess the effectiveness of health promotion programs.

This publication is comprised of three main sections.
  1. Foundations of Theory in Health Promotion and Health Behavior - includes the "basics" to apply theory to the practice of health promotion, addresses the way in which theory and models can be useful in practice of health promotion and provides basic definitions and the context
  2. Theories and Applications - begins with the presentation of an ecological perspective of the programmes of health promotion and then describes several theories or models of individual and interpersonal behaviour. Each theory is presented as a possible method of solving a practical problem. Subsequently a brief description is presented, as are fundamental definitions of concepts and additional examples or case studies.
  3. Putting Theory and Practice Together - identifies different processes of integration - explains how theories can be used in planning, execution and promotion of health programmes.
