Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

WSIS Video Diaries - Global

OneWorld TV is working with a team of young journalists filming reports at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, December 10-12 2003. Several young video journalists from India, Sri Lanka, and Uruguay will cover a number of topics explored at the Summit, sharing their perspectives through online reports and video diaries. The purpose of this programme is to give young people a voice in the media being produced as part of the international event.
Communication Strategies
This initiative uses technology to involve young people in media coverage of the WSIS. Young reporters are attending the Summit, and will share their perspectives and experiences with global audiences using a video camera and the Internet. Two young women - Claudia Abend from Uruguay and Monjima Sinha from India - and a team from Young Asia TV (Sri Lanka) will upload regular video reports, interviews, and diaries to One World TV site. Those who access the WSIS Diaries on the One World TV site can listen to and watch each of the young reporters prior to and during the Summit sessions.

The young video journalists will attend the debates, workshops, and other events at the WSIS, the ICT for Development Platform, and related meetings. They aim to cover issues like access to technology, governance of the Internet, open source software, local content, gender issues, youth and the media, mainstream and community media, and others.

Additional video "clips" on the One World TV site provide background information and details on the WSIS. Topics covered include:
  • What can we expect from the Information Summit?
  • How do ICTs for Development work?
  • Open Knowledge Network launches at WSIS
  • Kofi Annan meets the inventor of the web
  • Russian truck brings medical aid through ICT
