Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Challenge and Response




From 1999 to 2001, the BBCWorld Service Trust, thecharitable arm of the BBC WorldService, ran the world's largest-everanti-leprosy media campaign.


India has two-thirds of theworld's cases of leprosy and isthe key country in the globaldrive toward eliminating thedisease by 2005.


Funded with a grant of£1.1 million from the British Government's Department forInternational Development, the campaign focussed on thecountry's five most leprosy-prevalent states, with a combinedpopulation of 480 million.


The project involved a unique tie-up with Indian statebroadcasters and a wide range of community media work forareas beyond the reach of TV and radio.


TV spots, dramas and studio shows were broadcast almost1,500 times. Radio spots, dramas and phone-in shows werebroadcast more than 6,000 times.


The media campaign contributed to more than 200,000 newleprosy patients coming forward for treatment.


It also had a dramatic impact on popular misconceptionsabout leprosy and prejudice against people with leprosy.
